Marquette County is located along the southern shore of Lake Superior in Michigan?s central Upper Peninsula. It was named after Father Marquette, a Jesuit missionary who came here during the late 1600?s.
The terrain varies from flat and swampy to a rocky mountain range in the north filled with iron ore which helped supply the Union during the Civil War.
Today, iron ore is still mined here, a major contributor to the area?s economy. Giant ore ships load from railroad cars on the north side of Marquette, the county seat. Other major contributors to the economy include paper manufacturing, tourism, prisons, Marquette General Hospital, and Northern Michigan University.
There are many outdoor recreational opportunities year ?round, including fishing, boating and canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing and a sled-dog race, the U.P. 200.
Most importantly, Marquette is one of the most beautiful spots in Michigan!
