GLOBAL ISSUES/HUMAN GEOGRAPHIES FILMS

A Film Series About Global Resource Issues

Co-sponsored by the Peter White Public Library and the Northern Michigan University Geography Department, each film is introduced and followed by a discussion of the topic.

Films begin at 7:00 pm in the Library's Community Room.

No admission charge.

Tuesday January 16 Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear and the Selling of American Empire
Examines how a radical fringe of the Republican Party has used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home. 2004. (64 minutes.)

Tuesday February 20 Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land: U.S. Media & the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Provides a striking comparison of US and international media coverage of the crisis in the Middle East, zeroing in on how distortions in US coverage have reinforced false perceptions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Exposes how the foreign policy interests of American political elites--oil, and a need to have a secure military base in the region, among others--work in combination with Israeli public relations strategies to exercise a powerful influence over how news from the region is reported. 2004. (80 minutes.)

Tuesday March 20 Bhopal: The Search for Justice

On December 2, 1984, the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India leaked poisonous gas, killing at least 15,000 people. Hundreds of thousands more were permanently maimed. Union Carbide is now owned by Dow Chemical Corporation. Twenty years later, amid charges of corruption, graft, and suppression of medical and environmental research, the victims are still not adequately compensated and cared for. Journalist Raajkumaar Keswani documents the legacy and introduces us to the leading scientists, doctors and activists in his search for justice. 2004. (52 minutes.)

Tuesday April 17 Scared Sacred
A documentary that asks the question: Can we be scared into the sacred? Can we take the trials of extreme historical situations and transform them into a force of awakening? Or will we succumb to groundlessness and fear? Takes us on a journey to the pivotal "Ground Zeros" of the world, places like Wounded Knee, Auschwitz, Hiroshima, New York City and Afghanistan, among the darkest moments of human history. The film seeks out stories of hope, transformation and resistance. 2004. (105 minutes.)
