Library Pet Partners

Children who are reluctant or struggling readers are matched with a trained therapy dog. With the help of a parent, teacher or library staff, the child chooses a book that interests him or her. In a quiet corner of the Library the child reads aloud to the dog, who "listens" in a non-judgmental way. The only other person present is the dog's owner/handler. There is no need for the reader to feel nervous, embarrassed, or shy, because the dog will not criticize.  This literacy program has found success around the country, showing an increase in reading levels and self-esteem when children are motivated by this positive environment.

To see how this program works, go to www.therapyanimals.org/read/about.html Although the Peter White Public Library is not affiliated with this national program, our Library Pet Partners are organized along the same principles.

Registration is necessary to participate in the Library Pet Partners. Sessions will be scheduled at the mutual convenience of the reader and dog owner.

Call 226.4323 for more information or to register.

One Million Pennies

We counted pennies on March 8, 2007, added 51,872, and...
our new total is 785,374 pennies!  (We're over two-thirds toward our goal.)

We say "Thanks a Million!" to all who have donated.

Youth Services will gladly accept your pennies, as well as your silver or gold coins and paper bills that can be exchanged into pennies. One million pennies equals $10,000. This money will be put into an endowment fund to purchase materials for the Youth Services Department in the future.
